Who turned up the heat?

Ever have one of those weeks where everything seems to be going wrong? Please. Please. PLEASE! If I'm the turkey I promise the pop-up timer has popped up. It's time to turn the oven off and let the bird cool.

A turkey dinner

Drew and I were at dinner tonight -- eating chicken, not turkey -- when the idea of this blog came to me. It wasn't a great flash, no light bulb clicked on, it wasn't served on a silver platter, no heavenly hosts singing, just one of those ideas that suddenly takes shape and demands immediate action. We needed a place to talk about our adventures, share information and photos, and laugh with you as we navigate this crazy thing called life. Heck, I've advised others to employ blogging as a communication medium so it was high time to take the plunge! Welcome to A Turkey Dinner.

Turkey Dinner? Huh? Yeah, the title bears some explanation. Hold on because this is going to seem convoluted. Deep breath ...

Drew's going to Turkey in June. He's traveling with a small contingent of middle school students to do physics at Fatih University in Istanbul and then spending another week sight-seeing. The June 8 - 19 trip is way cool! Watch out for fund raising opportunities, photos from the trip, his mom shedding tears when he gets on the plane, and a jet lagged teenager upon return. Turkey - the country.

As we debated names for a blog related to the trip, we realized that the blog needed to have a shelf life past June 19th. Talking about options, we realized turkey had many connotations, many synonyms, and the word elicited feelings of tradition and imagery related to family and home. "Turkey dinner" sounded like it had, well, meat. It's also a funny looking creature. Turkey - life.

To go even deeper - and this is REALLY deep - Drew's initials are ATD which is also the acronym for this blog. (Too deep?) OK. OK. It was just a coincidence, but you have to agree that it's pretty cool.

So here we are. A Turkey Dinner is a blog about our life, our adventures, laughter, family, home, travel, work, meat, sustenance, funny creatures, feathers, wishbones, and what's inside. I'm typing and you're reading. Enjoy your turkey dinner!

** UPDATE** Today is 9/29/08 and the move from "A Turkey Dinner" to "::a pink turkey" was just completed. No turkeys were harmed in the effort: all original posts have been saved along with the original date and time stamps. The way this blogger's voice has evolved, the new layout and name feel much more complementary to the words. I hope you like it!
