the purple fiddle adventure

Here is a transcript of our conversation around 3:30pm Tuesday afternoon:

Me: Feel like an adventure tonight?

Turkey: Um. Living with you is always an adventure.

Me: (feeling all awww-y now) Right. Want to see Enter the Haggis?

Turkey: (smiling broadly) Tonight?!?!?

Me: Yep. They are playing tonight just a couple hours' drive away. Want to go?

Turkey: HECK YEAH!

And so it came to be. A spur-of-the-moment trip to see Enter the Haggis, an upbeat band from Toronto that has a prime spot in our iTunes library.

They were playing at the Purple Fiddle in Thomas, WV so it was just a ride out I-70 then turn left past Hagerstown, right? About 2.5 hours away, right?

Not exactly.

What I was imagining to be a 2.5 hour drive was really a FOUR hour drive! Unfortunately we were halfway there when this finally dawned on me. Yikes! We made up some time through the curvy-twisty-up-and-down-and-curve-again-hairpin-turn roads in West Virginia (another yikes!) but we made it just as ETH finished their second song of the set.

We quickly discovered the Purple Fiddle is a delightful little place, with your choice of old church pews or tables and chairs to perch and watch the band on the small corner stage. It is very family friendly, non-smoking, and quaint. They even serve hand-dipped ice cream in addition to the usual bar standards! Click on the link and check out all the bands they have coming through. Every town needs a purple fiddle!

The ETH performance itself was super fun. We thoroughly enjoyed the songs and the guys' quirky sense of humor. We sang along with several songs, clapped and hollered, spoke to a couple of the band members, hopped back in the car, drove another few hours, and pulled in our driveway the same night at -- hold on to your mouse -- 2:50am! You don't want to know the last time I was up that late...

What a night! We loved the impetuousness, the adventure, and the music.

When was the last time you did something crazy like that?
